REALISM TO ABSTRACTION

A painting is about
capturing a moment.

This painting was a special moment between my friend, Karen and her dog Missy. I hoped to capture a moment, the moment of unquestionable love between the two of them. This scene was even more meaningful to me as Karen is a very good friend and Missy is my favorite dog. Missy’s status is in large part due to the fact that while she does not like most people, she likes me. I consider myself one of her favorites and reward her with belly rubs and ear scratches.

Painting in various styles allows me the freedom to be more creative. When I approached the canvas to start the painting, I wanted more than a painted version of a photo, realistic, showing every detail. I used large brushstrokes to give movement to the painting. Realism to abstraction is a long evolution. The subject may still be recognizable; however, the details are replaced with compositional elements which engage the view and allow them to fill in their own details.
