STUDENT PROFILE:
PHYLLIS GUSS

Since childhood, I have loved animals. Work and life choices have paired me with cats. I now have two long-haired, mostly Maine Coon cats from the local shelter, who have often served as my models.

The grace of feline poses, the air of the wild, and cats’ matter of factness are part of what attracts me.

In additional to cat portraits – sometimes traditional and, more recently, up-close excerpts – I love the challenge of capturing them in the landscape.

I enjoy getting lost in the varied colors and textures of fur as well as the subtle energy of a usually moving body captured in stillness. If the viewer comes away with a greater appreciation of felines, the painting has worked.
