STUDENT PROFILE: DENISE RANKIN

This series, called Freedoms Bound, arose from my reaction to the long-term consequences of 9/11. The horrific attack shook us so deeply as a nation that we have been willing to give up our personal liberties for a greater feeling of security. The paintings make vague references to freedom of movement, intellectual freedom, reproductive rights, gender roles, diminished environment, all bound up in string. Don’t ask me what the asparagus means. . . I have no idea.

 

ART STUDENT STATEMENT

The seven years I have studied painting with Katharina has enriched my life in many ways. Besides growing in the essential skills of an artist, I have benefitted from the input, encouragement and support of a wonderful group of students. We’ve had our arms around each other for years, celebrating every breakthrough, every success.
